Chinese President Xi Jinping’s daughter studied at Harvard, but now, thanks to the billionaire co-founder of Chinese real estate giant SOHO China, the chance to study at the prestigious U.S. institution is available even to impoverished Chinese students. In July, real estate mogul Zhang Xin and her husband, Pan Shiyi, made a $15 million donation to Harvard to fund study for poor Chinese. Critics in China decried the donation as unpatriotic, but the charitable endowment marks a step forward for China’s underdeveloped philanthropy sphere.
